Who is the best team player in cricket?

Of course you would! Many of you might have come to a conclusion about how arrogant Gautam Gambhir is, to be behaving in such a way with Virat Kohli, the heartthrob who is currently the biggest match-winner in the Indian team and arguably in international cricket.

But what most of you do not know is what happened way back in 2009 when Virat Kohli was still a budding youngster and Gautam Gambhir was a senior regular in the team and had won the ICC Test Cricketer of the Year, CEAT International Cricketer of the Year, Arjuna Award by then.

It was the 4th ODI between India and Sri Lanka at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The Sri Lankans batted first and scored 315, thanks to a splendid 100 from Upul Tharanga. 300+ was never successfully chased at the Eden Gardens before. If India had any chance at all, Sachin and Sehwag would have to play well, everyone had thought.

Just as in the 2011 World Cup final, both of them departed quickly, and it was up to Gautam Gambhir and his Delhi teammate young Virat Kohli to build a partnership and create a platform from where India can chase the target successfully. Both of them did just that and built an incredible partnership without risks.

Virat went on to get his maiden ODI hundred. Virat Kohli perished for 107 and Gambhir went on to finish the match for India with his career best 150*and India clinched the series too.

It was one of those rare occasions where Gautam Gambhir's effort wasn't overshadowed and he was in the limelight. In the post-match presentation later, he would get a rare Player of the Match for himself.

When he was called to talk and collect his trophy as the Player of the Match, he talked about how Kohli's knock was equally crucial for the team under those circumstances, and how it is Kohli's knock which should be recognized as it was his first 100 in international cricket, that too a one that came under pressure while chasing such a big target.

He told it was Kohli who was the real Player of the Match and gifted the trophy to Kohli.

"When you have someone at the other end who can score runs quickly, especially when you have lost early wickets, it takes the pressure off you. With Kohli attacking, I was able to settle down and do just that"

When a senior in the team who's currently one of the best appreciates you, recognizes your contribution and tells that you are the real Player of the Match and gifts you the Award, it is bound to boost your morale and make you feel that you belong to this level. I am not telling Kohli's success there after has anything to do with what Gambhir did. But it was a wonderful gesture to allow a newbie to be in the limelight, when he himself gets the limelight very rarely

Later captaining the Kolkata Knight Riders, he repeated the same gesture by gifting his Player of the Match Award to Surya Kumar Yadav, another youngster who plays domestic cricket for Mumbai and represents Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL.

According to me, Gautam Gambhir is one of the best team players in cricket.
